The Second One

Blog > A Land Called Bournemouth & Drawing > The Second One

The project title was “timeframe”.

Sunday (the night before the deadline) I didn’t go to bed; I worked through the night and when it got to 8am, I had my shower and went to uni.

Timeframe

Welcome to every British town (click to see larger)

I don’t think this piece is as successful as the last but I’m still happy with it.

For the piece I used: black felt-tips, newspaper, watercolours, and masking tape.

To keep going I had: late-night cheese toasties, the Aristocats soundtrack and a couple of coffees.

Birthday Cake

Blog > A Land Called Bournemouth & Adventure Food > Birthday Cake

One of the interesting cakes Ellen and Lewis created for my birthday:

Marshmallow Hole

“Marshmallow Hole”

The stuff in the middle is melted marshmallow with hundreds and thousands.

Thanks everybody for the cakes, cards, presents, food, and facebook messages.

First Project

Blog > A Land Called Bournemouth & Drawing > First Project

The project was effectively set for a period of two weeks. This is the result of around 200 pages of ideas and development.

The actual poster involved 4 felt tip pens (G&T multipacks - 39p), some Wilkinson’s brown wrapping paper (65p), 4 sleepless nights and a lot of really helpful responses to some annoying emails I sent out. Thanks to everybody that replied.

The words “whale sized” and “ship them off” are some of your comments, and they are formed from quotes from every comment I received. The lettering was all freehand.

Things I’ve learnt from this project:

» It takes a long time to colour anything in with fine felt-tips.

» You can create a large-scale final piece for a project for less than £2.

» Accidentally putting a spoonful of strawberry milkshake powder into your coffee at 5am, without realising, can be a pleasant surprise.

The Great South Run

Blog > Running > The Great South Run

The run went really well. I completed the 10 miles in 1 hour 27 minutes. Didn’t quite beat Paula Radcliffe, but maybe next time.

7006

I got a free space blanket and some dried fruit flakes (space food?), a packet of BBQ flavour crisps and some pieces of flapjack. I was disappointed to be overtaken by somebody in an elephant costume, but I did beat an old man, a banana and Rocky. I came in 3,840th out of 19,500 runners so I’m really pleased (especially given my lack of training over the last few weeks).

Thank you to everybody who, very kindly, sponsored me. If there is anybody who would still like to, it’s not too late. Just get in contact with me or click here.

Here are my stats:

5k time: 00h25m57 | 10k time: 00h54m15 | 15k time: 01h21m57

10miles (16.1k) time: 1h27m29

Position: 3,840th out of 19,500 runners

Oh, and I beat Jack!

Paper boats

Blog > A Land Called Bournemouth > Paper boats

It’s taken me a while, but here, finally, are the pictures from the second paper boat session.

Boys boats

The boys’ boats (Lewis’s, mine, George’s):

I didn’t get any decent photos of Sophie’s boat or Ellen’s, but here’s a photo of them, and a link to their new blog.

Sophie & Ellen

Unfortunately mine didn’t make it further than a metre from where it started. Sophie’s won a bit. A fluke.

The September that was

Blog > A Land Called Bournemouth & Running > The September that was

Apologies to anybody who has been waiting for an update. The wait is over now.

I’ve been living in Bournemouth for seven weeks now. Well that’s not exactly true; I actually live in a place called Winton, which is a 10 minute bicycle ride from Bournemouth town centre. Winton is a handy place to live in. It’s close to uni and has all the necessary conveniences of a modern town - almost every supermarket you could dream of (yes there is a LIDL), lots of charity shops and a newsagent called ISBIR that sells 2 bottles of wine for £5.

Selina & Amelia

The inhabitants of Winton are very colourful. There are quite a few alcoholics, a lady with a ferret, an OAP who dresses like a black rapper and two thirds of the student population of the AIB and BU.

Lewis on the roof

I haven’t been running as much as I ought to have been, and the run is a week today. I did run 7 miles on Wednesday and Thursday and 10 miles today though, so both of my knee caps are on their way out.

Going to an arts institute, I’ve found myself doing quite a bit of art recently, but that will wait until another time when I’m not so tired.

There is, in fact, a lot of news, but I’ve been too busy/lazy to blog about it. Keep checking though; the site will continue soon.

Home is where your art is

Blog > A Land Called Bournemouth > Home is where your art is

I’m really sorry to anybody that was offended by the title of this entry.

Yesterday, I went down to Bournemouth and met the people who I’ll be living at uni with, for the first time. I took some of the bags of things for uni that have been filling up my room recently, and very importantly, I took my camera. So this is where I’ll be living, on and off, for the next year:

My room is small and blue and nice. The house is just out of Bournemouth, in Winton. It’s a short walk from uni, a shorter walk from Wetherspoons and a long walk from town.

“The cake”

Blog > Adventure Food > “The cake”

Okay, a lot of people have been asking to see photos of the cake I made for Katie’s birthday.

It didn’t come out quite as I had planned, but here it is:

The cake!

Made from PEZ, dolly mixture, Starburst, Fruittella, chocloate buttons, fizzy rainbow things, candy letters, wafers, sherbert and sponge.

Going the distance

Blog > Running > Going the distance

The last few days I keep thinking I’ll go on a bike ride, then I don’t for various reasons: too soon after breakfast, not enough time before lunch, too cold, too hot, etc. Then Tuesday I realised it’s not even cycling I should be putting off, it’s running.

So I took the first step towards going for a run by turning on my computer and opening Google Earth (as always) and mapping out something that looked quite pleasant. Since I signed up to take part in the Great South Run, I haven’t actually been for a run (bar the couple of miles I ran to my Granny’s a few weeks ago). So I thought I should start within my comfort zone and maybe do a 4 or 6 mile run (because even numbers are nice). But then… I got carried away with Google Earth and my ego and worked out a 10 mile run. Easy!

Luckily I didn’t think about the huge distance until I had already set off (second time around - I forgot my water bottle the first time) and had gone too far to turn back.

Route 1
